| Detail of
oil painting inside Italian outer case lid.
Inspired by the
paintings of Claude Lorrain and Pierre Patel in the
National Gallery, London.
Lorrain (1604-1682) was the earliest exponent of positioning the sun close to the centre of the canvas, thus providing a pictorial unity with all
colours and tones in harmonic adjustment.
The impressionist William Turner (1775-1851) was much
influenced by this innovation.
We regarded Lorrain's buildings to be too 'fresh' or 'new
looking' for our purposes and so
the ruins are inspired by the work of Pierre Patel (1605-1676)
and his 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt'.
